A collection of papal bulls and briefs, petitions, grants, licenses, passes, certifications, etc., originating in Italy, Mexico, or Spain and relating to the religious brotherhood of St. Hippolytus and its hospitals, particularly the hospital founded by Bernardino Álvarez in the environs of Mexico City. Includes provisions issued by Popes Sixtus V, Clement VIII, Paul V, Innocent XII, Innocent XIII, Clement XI, Clement XII, Benedict XIV, and Clement XIV, and by Cardinal-Vicar Gaspare Carpegna. (Cont.) The file deals with the growth of the brotherhood into an established order under the rule of St. Augustine, acceptance and reform of its constitution, recognition and installation of its officers and agents, appointment of Thomas Maria Ferrarius as its Cardinal-Protector, granting of indulgences and licenses, installation of holy relics in its buildings by Father Pedro Chirinos, procedure in regard to persons dying in its hospitals, and other matters. Originals and certified copies, including Latin and Spanish texts and Spanish translations, many items with signatures and paper seals; some with passes of the Council of the Indies, the Real Acuerdo in Mexico City, or the Council and Commission of the Holy Crusade.
